| Agneau mystique Creation date : 2006 - Availability : Contact us 40 x 20 cm. Cyanotype. The notion of landscape exists as long as we bother framing and composing it (here in photography) ; it’s a part of what we see around us. Drawing a real image from the surroundings allows us to not only conceive of it from a certain point of view, but especially to step back from it, since the fact of representing does not reproduce what we see or what was with ease. Photography comes down to “sucking the real dry” by drawing substance from the visible matter, the one that we think is the same for all of us : and yet, an image is not a copy, nor a pale reflection of the reality. When we look at photography, we are not really looking at a place that exists, but its representation : here, a landscape. The space is divided into three parts (somewhat like the retables of the 15th and 16th centuries) and laid out horizontally, underlining the linear aspect of the subject and the way the spectator contemplates the mountains. If this contemplation is not detached, it is due to the animal, a sheep, which by its presence highlights, paradoxically, the immensity that surrounds it. Still, when you look closer, you can make out other silhouettes behind our animal that appear like symbols. By what strangeness or artifice does it capture all our attention ? Is it due to its position at the center of the image ; or by its unusual glow in the midst of a dark and blurry context ? (The fact that it watches us with insistence draws us into this same landscape radically ; it is at once the intruder and the thing with which we identify.) The scene is apparently simple, but is still disquieting; the feeling is accentuated by the blue and hypnotic color that plunges us into a universe for which we lack the codes. The work is ambiguous by both its subject and its construction, this photograph can nevertheless be considered an icon ; the mystical lamb is the catalyser of the entire surface of the image ; an emblematic figure that attracts and becomes the focus if not of veneration or devotion at least of our attention.
