Art on Foam
By bringing together the world’s best artists of the Board Culture around the surfboard, Spacejunk and Quiksilver have identified an artistic movement. The works of art presented here, and which speak naturally to anyone sensitive to this culture, whether they boardride or not, will be exhibited in the Spacejunk Board Culture Art Centers in Grenoble, Bourg-Saint- Maurice and Bayonne, before heading out to Australia, China, and then on to most European capitals.
The essence of the Board Culture is an ensemble of positive values inherent to board sports: respect for the environment and our planet’s ecology; respect for the human body; and a passion for music and art...
This international exposition renders homage to the artists of the Board Culture—“Board Rider Artists” as they sometimes call themselves. The extraordinary creativity of the artists of this milieu (surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding) are united by a common obsession: expose their art on the objects that set these athletes and aesthetes free—their boards.
For this reason, Spacejunk invited them to work with the emblematic surfboard; like a painting on a canvas, they render to surfing one of its primordial functions: receive and transmit artistic expression. Whether they’re from the U.S.A., Australia or Europe, all the artists exposed have a bond with at least one of these sports—not that they necessary practice
(even if this is usually the case)—but because their style is intimately associated with one of them. Be it surfing, as is the case for Reg Mombassa (Aus.) and Marcie O’Neill (Aus.); skateboarding for Dave Kinsey (USA); snowboarding for Nicolas Thomas (France); and skiing for Travis Parr (USA); all of the artists assembled here have contributed their style to at least one of the marks associated with these sports.
Today, these artists are known for their long-term commitment to this milieu, which began at a time when the reputation of these sports was far from what it is today…
So, at last, we can use the term legitimacy.
